AABT01 Trek on the Royal Mountain Range  15D/14N



A great trip that permits close encounter with the Aymara people. Enjoy the highlands of unspoiled nature, its flora and fauna. This wonderful trek runs along the western and eastern sides of the Cordillera Real de Bolivia, an amazing mountain range that stretches for about 160km from the Illampu-Ancohuma massif in the northwest end to the Illimani peak on the south.

Day 1: Arrival in La Paz:

Arrival in the city of La Paz. Our guide and driver will welcome you and transfer to the centrally located hotel in La Paz. Free time for resting and getting used to the high altitude.

Day 2: La Paz.

Today we will make a ½-day tour to visit the city and its main attractions: First, we go to the Killi Killi viewpoint from where we get a great view of the city of La Paz. Then we drive to the Jaen street where we will be visiting 4 museums (Casa Murillo, Gold House, Coca Leaves, and Folklore Music Instruments), then we go down to the Murillo square with the cathedral and the Government House. Our tour will continue to visit the interesting and bizarre  witches Indian Market, the busy Sagarnaga Street, San Francisco Square and finally we go for a walk on area known as the “Moon Valley”, an interesting geological formation not far from La Paz. Day 3: La Paz – Tiawanaku – Copacabana:

In the morning, we transfer you to the village of Tiawanaku where we will visit the well-known and interesting pre-Inca remains of this ancient culture. Here we visit Akapana Pyramid, the Monoliths, the Sun and Moon doors, and the rest of this interesting archeological site. From here, we go for lunch in a local restaurant in the town of Pto. Perez located on the shores of the Titicaca Lake. After lunch, we continue our drive towards the colorful town of Copacabana located on the shores of Titicaca Lake and where, we will overnight in a local hotel. Time for a walk to visit the main church and the Plaza de Armas. (B, LB).

Day 4: Copacabana – Sun Island – Chokñakjota camp:

In the morning, we make a tour to the Sun Island, an interesting place where is supposed the Inca Empire’s first inhabitants were originated. Return to Copacabana and we drive towards Hichukhota valley, the main entrance to the Chachacomani-Negruni region. The three-hour drive will take us to the shores of Lake Chokñakjota at 4420m/14498ft of altitude. Camp. (B, L, D).

Day 5: Chokñakjota – Ajwani camp:

We start our first day trek towards our camp at Ajwani Lake at 4500m/14760ft above sea level. This region is known as the Chacapa Massif mountain range. (B, LB, D).

Day 6: Ajwani camp – Lake Jurikhota camp:  Today we cross two high gaps: Janchallani at 4800m/15744ft and Jurikhota pass at 4900m/16072ft before we arrive at our camp at an altitude of 4700m/15416ft on the shores of Lake Jurikhota. From the camp, we enjoy magnificent views of the northern sides of the Condoriri Massif. (B, LB, D).

Day 7: Jurikhota camp – Lake Chiarjota (Condoriri camp):

We trek along a moraine, which takes us up to a wonderful ice lake at the base of the glaciers. This is the most spectacular pass. We continue our trek to reach its highest point at 5100m/16728ft from where we can observe the Condoriri peak. We descend towards the Condoriri valley where we set up our camp at Lake Chiarjota at 4650m/15252ft. (B, LB, D).

Day 8: Lake Chiarjota rest day:

Rest day to enjoy this beautiful spot with nice views of the surrounding mountains: Condoriri, Pequeño Alpamayo, Pequeña Illusion, etc. (B, LB, D).

Day 9: Lake Chiarjota – Liviñosa Lake:

This is a great day and a magnificent trek crossing two high passes and heading down towards Liviñosa Valley where we find a beautiful lagoon. We are already on the eastern side of the Royal Range and we can experience the changes in temperature and climate. Camp at 3700m/12136ft. (B, LB, D).

Day 10: Liviñosa – Tiquimani camp:

Crossing the small village of Botijlaca, we head towards the settlement of Uma Palca at the eastern side of Tiquimani peak. This trek will take us around the base of this impressive rocky peak. Camp at 4630m/15186ft. (B, LB, D).

Day 11: Tiquimani camp – Sanja Valley camp:

Trekking on the eastern side of Matilde Peak, we head down eastern towards the Sanja Valley. Camp at 3800m/12464ft. (B, LB, D).

Day 12: Sanja ValleySamana Pampa Village:

A 2-hour trek will take us to the Chucura pass from where another 3 hours trekking will take us down to Samana Pampa village, the gateway to the jungle of Bolivia. Camp at 3900m/12790ft. (B, LB, D).

Day 13: Samana Pampa – La Cumbre Pass – La Paz:

This day we follow a spectacular Inca Road. This trail takes us up to La Cumbre Pass at 4700m/15416ft from where a short walk leads us down to the near valley to meet our vehicle. Transport back to La Paz. Hotel. (B, LB).

Day 14: La Paz free day:

Free day in La Paz. Hotel. (B).

Day 15: La Paz transfer out:

Transfer out to the airport or program extension. (B).
