AAPJ02 Iquitos and the Amazon River          3D/2N

Day 1: Lima – Iquitos – Jungle Lodge

Arrival and reception at the Iquitos International Airport. Transfer to the Port of Bellavista Nanay, where we will board a speedboat to the Lodge via the Amazon River. During this ride, we will be able to observe the convergence of the brown turbid Amazon River with the dark waters of the Nanay River. We will enjoy the impressive jungle landscape and the rustic small houses of the riverside towns. After arriving in the lodge, a complimentary jungle drink will be served. Lunch. In the afternoon, we will start a jungle hike into the Yanamono Reserve, a primary rainforest reserve. Our expert indigenous guides will identify various botanical species such as the Heliconia plant, medicinal plants and giant trees such as the White silk-cotton tree (Ceiba Pentandra) whose dimensions are so large that 25 persons can circle the giant tree. During this time we will also see various bird species such as the Turkey Vulture (Cathartes Aura), Black Fronted Nanbird (Monasa-Atia), etc., and with a little luck we will be able to see small monkeys such as marmosets (sanguineous fusicollis) , and The Titi Monkey (Callicebus Mollock Mollock) and Frailes Monkey (Saimiri Boliviense). Return to the lodge and rest. After observing the Amazonia Sunset, we will take a night boat ride to the Manco Gulch, if the river is high enough, or along the Amazon River where we will enjoy the magical sounds of the jungle and the light of the moon. Or, if it's a clear night, we can observe the constellations. Dinner and overnight in the Lodge. L, D.

Day 2: Jungle Lodge - Iquitos

Early bird watching activity. We will start very early and go by boat to Caceres Gulch. We will be looking out for birds such as the Tuki (Jacana Jacana), Ringed Kingfisher (Ceryle-Torquata), Black-Collared Hawk (Busarellus nigricollis), etc. We will also be able to see the very impressive giant Victoria Regia (Giant Water Lily) located inside the lakes that are on Yanamono Island (if the water level permits). Return to the lodge for breakfast. After a short rest, we will visit a Yagua village where we will have an opportunity to learn about their way of life. Return to the lodge. Lunch. In the afternoon, we will take a small fishing trip into small tributaries of the Amazon River. The most daring can go for Piranhas. During this time, we can also have the opportunity to look out for the Pink Amazon River Dolphin (Inia Geoffrensis). Return to the lodge for dinner. (B, L, D).
