AAET11   Trekking Carihuairazo & Chimborazo   7D/6N

This is an exclusive and spectacular Andes Adventures trip that will take us along impressive mountain ranges of the Carihuairazo (5020m) and Chimborazo (6310m) volcanoes. Our trek will end at the famous Chimborazo Whimper hut at 5000m.

Day 1: Transport to Tisaleo Village on the upper hills of the northeast side of Mount Carihuairazo. From here we start our first day 3 hour trek until we reach our first camp site on San Antonio highlands (3500m). (B, LB). 

Day 2: San Antonio - Paramos de Hatillo: In our second day we will cross the beautiful Salasaca valley and then we will reach our first high mountain pass at 4,450 m at the base of the impressive eastern rocky walls of the Carihuairazo volcano. From here we descend to the Carboneria valley and then down to our second camp at 3600m. (B, LB, D).

Day 3: Paramos de Hatillo – Quebrada Abraspungo: This day we trek first to the Carboneria valley. Heading west we will trek up to our second high pass at 4300m just on the base of the impressive Mocha peak. While we will enjoy our first great views of the amazing Mount Chimborazo, we will then descend to our next camp located on the deep Abraspungo Gorge. Camp at 3700m. (B, LB, D).

Day 4: Quebrada Abraspungo – Isapapungo (Vicuñas camp): Trekking west towards the huge plateau located between the Carihuairazo and Chimborazo volcanoes. Enjoy great views of the glaciers of Chimborazo contrasting with the beautiful moor land grass of the lower lands of Carihuairazo volcano. Camp at 4100m. (B, LB, D).

Day 5: Isapapungo – Pogyos Camp: We will start trekking along the high paramos of the north-west side of Chimborazo. The huge glaciers and the arid area of this side of the mountain are impressive. Camp at 4000m. (B, LB, D).

Day 6: Pogyos - Whimper refuge: From here a 6 hour trek will take us towards the Whimper hut at 5000m. After a short rest we will descend to the Carrel hut at 4800m where we will stay overnight. (B, LB, D).

Day 7: Morning hike up to the Chamonix Needles at 5400m. Enjoy great views of the mountain and the surroundings. Descend to the Carrel refuge and transport back to Quito (or Baños or program extension to the Jungle or Galapagos, etc.). (B).
