Antisana-vol 600

The region of the Antisana Volcano gives the trekker a wonderful view of the beautiful Ecuadorian Andes. During this trek we will have the opportunity to observe several species of Andean birds: caracaras, hummingbirds, mountain gals and the impressive Condor, one of biggest flying bird on the world. The tiny colorful flowers as the chuquiraguas, the lancentilla de paramo or the several species of gentians give the area an amazing look.

Day 1: We pick up you from your hotel in Quito and then transport by car to El Tambo settlement on the highlands of Papallacta Lagoon. From here, our mules will carry our heavy equipment and luggage. The trek (4 hours) head south-west to the lower plains around the volcano lake (Laguna Tumiguina). Camp I at 3650m. (Lunch Box, Dinner).

Day 2: Early start for the longest (5-6 hours) part of the trek. Some hill climbing is to start, later on crossing a luxuriant polylepis forest, and then with beautiful views through the day we will continue until we reach our next campsite on Santa Lucia highlands on the northwestern side of the Antisana volcano. From here, we can enjoy magnificent views of the impressive volcano. There is also a possibility of seeing condors at some time during the day. Camp II at 4200m. (B, LB, D).

Day 3: In our last day, our trekking will take us to the plains of the Antisana volcano and always facing the west glaciers of the mountain. We will then descend to a point where we meet our car, which will transport us back to Quito. In your way down and while on the high Antisana plateaus, watch for condors. (B, LB)
