AAEFDC02     Cotopaxi Volcano South & North     3D/2N


This wonderful expedition will permit us to climb the South and north (main) summits of Cotopaxi following the interesting and challenging south route, then climbing to the main summit and descending via the normal north route.   

Day 1: Quito – Lodge Cotopaxi Cara Sur:

From Quito, we drive south to the Cotopaxi National Park. Our transport will take us to the south side of the mountain where the find the small village known as Ticatilin. From here a pleasant 4 hours hike will take us to the Lodge "Cotopaxi Cara Sur" (3900m) where we will overnight. During the trek, we will enjoy nice views of the Latacunga Valley and the Cotopaxi Volcano. Lunch Box, Dinner.

Day 2: Lodge Cara Sur – Morurco – High Camp (4600m)

In the morning and after a hearty breakfast in the lodge, we start our second day trek towards the base of "El Morurco" a rocky out crop located at the base of the Cotopaxi Volcano and which has its origin at one of the heavy eruptions of the volcano. During the trek, we enjoy nice views of the Morurco itself and of the perfect Cotopaxi snow-capped cone and south to the beautiful Andean valleys. After surrounding El Morurco, we will arrive to the high camp located at 4600m of altitude. Overnight at the high camp. Breakfast, Lunch Box, Dinner.

Day 3: High Camp – Cotopaxi Summit (5897m) – Rivas Hut - Quito

We will get an early awake up at 11 p.m. and after preparing our equipment and having a light breakfast, at midnight we start our climb following the south route. We have to deal with some crevasses and snowfields until we will reach the south summit of the volcano after 6 hours of climbing. From here, we follow the rim of the impressive crater to reach the main summit at about 7 a.m. Weather permitting you will enjoy magnificent views of the crater and of the volcanos of Ecuador: Antisana, Sincholagua, Cayambe, Chimborazo, etc. Then you will descend from the mountain following the north normal route and so completing a full climbing loop of the Cotopaxi Volcano. The descend will take about 4 hours until you will reach the Rivas Hut where you get a warm soup before descending to the parking lot from where you will be transported back to Quito. Breakfast, Lunch Box.

Note: we can offer this tour also in 4 days (extra cost) for better acclimatization.
