AAEP01   Trekking & Climbing on The Cotopaxi National Park Volcanoes  10D/9N


The Cotopaxi National Park, with an area of 35000 hectares, is a very interesting and beautiful natural area for eager climbers and adventurers. The valley of Limpiopungo at an average height of 3800m is located at the base of the following volcanoes: the Rumiñahui (4712m), the Sincholagua (4898m) and the Cotopaxi (5897m).

Day 1: Arrival in Quito. Transfer to the hotel.

Day 2: Full day tour in Quito. This is a good option for acclimatization at 2800m. In the morning we will visit the old town with the colonial attractive narrow cobbled streets and beautiful churches. In the afternoon we visit the town of La Mitad del Mundo and the Equator Monument. In the evening, welcome drink with slide show. (B).

Day 3: Quito – Pita River camp. Drive from Quito to the small city of Sangolqui and then continuing towards the small village of San Fernando. From here our first day trek (3 hours) will take us along small villages and cultivated camps. Good opportunity to observe the way of life of the Ecuadorian highland “campesinos” and enjoy nice views of the paramos of Ecuador. We trek to the banks of the Pita River where our first camp is located at 3150m. (B, LB, D).

Day 4: Pita River – Sincholagua camp. Hike up to 3700m, to the foothills of the Pasochoa volcano. Enjoy great views of Sincholagua volcano and weather permitting we can already see the beautiful snow capped cone of Cotopaxi Volcano. We continue our trek through the Pedregal Tambo highlands with wonderful views of Pasochoa, Sincholagua and Cotopaxi Volcanoes. We will camp at 3800m at the base of Sincholagua volcano. (B, LB, D).

Day 5: Climb Mount Sincholagua (4893m). This day we will have the opportunity to climb to the summit of Mount Sincholagua, a nice rocky peak. This is a long, demanding day, but worth the effort to enjoy great views of the highlands and the impressive Cotopaxi Volcano. Return to our camp on Limpiopungo valley. (B, LB, D).

Day 6: Climb Rumiñahui Volcano. Today starts with a steady climb by the lower ridges of the Rumiñahui Volcano until we meet the rocky section that leads us to the summit of this volcano. Then we will trek back to our camp at 3800m. (B, LB, D).

Day 7: Camp Sincholagua – Cotopaxi Hut. We will transfer you by car to the Cotopaxi parking lot at 4600m. From here we make a short trek to the hut at 4800m. Afternoon climbing practices on the nearby glaciers. Stay overnight in the hut. (B, LB, D).

Day 8: Climb Cotopaxi summit – Quito. After midnight starts the 6-7 hours climb to the summit of the impressive Cotopaxi volcano. Weather permitting we will enjoy excellent views of the Ecuadorian volcanoes and the beautiful surroundings. Descend to the parking lot and drive back to Quito. (B, LB).

Day 9: Quito Free day. Day in Quito just to relax, or visit on your own this charming city. We can also use this day as a reserve day for a new try to climb Cotopaxi if the first attempt was not successful. B.

Day 10: Quito out. Transfer out (or program extension). (B).
