AAEC05     Chimborazo Volcano (6310m)  3D/2N

chimborazo-ecuador-hiking

Day 1: Early departure from Quito, by car drive south on the Pan-American Highway until we reach the slopes of Chimborazo. After approximately 5 hours the drive ends at the lower Carrel mountain hut (4800m). After lunch we will have time for an acclimatization walk. Rest of the afternoon is spent at leisure. (LB, D).

Day 2: Trek to the Whimper hut located at 5000m and followed by a high altitude walk. An early dinner and sleep follows. The same day, wake up at 23:00 p.m. for breakfast and start the climb. (B, L, D).

Day 3: The climb goes towards the moraines that go up to the “Castle” (a rocky spot), where the ice path begins to head up along the ridges of the south-west slopes. The views are spectacular and unique from here. From the summit, if weather permits, the Pacific Ocean can be seen. The climb lasts an average of 8-9 hours to the top (depending on weather and participant’s conditions). (B, LB).
