The Apolobamba Mountain Range is located northwest of Lake Titicaca, and crosses the border into Peru. This rarely visited mountain range and mystical due to the search of the Paititi (El Dorado), is one of the most extraordinary areas in Bolivia, and due to its fauna and flora and eco-systems of amazing beauty not yet well discovered.  

Day 1: Arrival in La Paz:
Arrival at the city of La Paz. Our guide and driver will welcome you and transfer to the centrally located hotel in La Paz. Free time for resting and getting used to the high altitude.  

Day 2: La Paz.
Today we will make a ½ day tour to visit the city and its main attractions: First we go to the Killi Killi view point from where we get a great view of the city of La Paz. Then we drive to the Jaen street where we will be visiting the 4 museums (Casa Murillo, Gold House, Coca Leaves, and Folklore Music Instruments), then we go down to the Murillo square with the cathedral and the Government House. Our tour will continue to visit the interesting and bizarre witches Indian Market, the busy Sagarnaga Street, San Francisco Square and finally we go for a walk on area known as the “Moon Valley”, an interesting geological formation not far from La Paz. Free afternoon. Hotel accommodations. (B).

Day 3: La Paz – Tiawanaku – Copacabana:
In the morning we transfer you to the village of Tiawanaku where we will visit the well-known and interesting pre-Inca remains of this ancient culture. Here we visit Akapana Pyramid, the Monoliths, the Sun and Moon doors, and the rest of this interesting archeological site. From here we go for lunch in a local restaurant in the town of Pto. Perez located on the shores of the Titicaca Lake. After lunch we continue our drive towards the colorful town of Copacabana, on the shores of the Titicaca Lake, and where we will overnight in a local hotel. Time to visit the main church, the Plaza, walk on the town. (B, LB).  

Day 4: Copacabana – Sun Island
Today, and using a local boat, we navigate to the Sun Island to visit their famous pre-Inca and Inca ruins. On the island of the Sun, believed as the place of origin of the Inca culture, we will do an interesting 10km trek which will permit us to visit small Indian villages, visit pre and Inca ruins (Pilcokaina, Sun Temple, Chinkana, etc.), and enjoy the wonderful landscape. Late in the afternoon return back to Copacabana and hotel accommodation. (B, L)  

Day 5: Copacabana – Lagunillas (also known as Tilinhuaya).
In the morning with our private transport we drive along the shores of mystical Lake Titicaca before crossing numerous charming villages in the style of the Altiplano. We can visit the chapel of the village of Carabuco, described like the “Sixteen chapel” of Bolivia. Then, after a lunch break, a winding road takes us to higher ground from where we can admire the cordillera Apolobamba and the imposing Akamani peak (5666m). We enter the Ulla Ulla national park, hosting more than 3000 Vicuñas and the most important population of Condors in Bolivia. In the middle of the afternoon, we reach the small community of Charazani where we can take advantage of the Hot Springs to relax (depending on time). After a few more hours of driving, we reach the hamlet of Lagunillas (about 6 hours of dirt road drive from Copacabana) at 3730m. Night in a lodge (or camp with tents). B, L, D.

Day 6: Lagunillas – Curva - Jatumpampa. Hiking time: 6 hours:
At about 8 a.m., we start our trekking towards Curva (3780m) town which is the base of the Kallawaya culture. The village remains one of the most typical in the region: stone houses, Indians in traditional garments (possibility to buy beautiful fabrics, traditional garments and ornaments). We will visit the hospital of traditional medicine, where practitioners heal using the regional plants. From Curva we continue our trek to Palca settlement, and where we find the join of three rivers (Canisaya, Llujlla, and Jatumpampa). From here we continue our trek in the gorge formed by impressive mountain rocky walls, and with great views of the mountains and the valleys of the area. Then we arrive to the place known as “Antas Khakayuj” (Large Rock) on the Jatumpampa area at 3984m. B, LB, D.

Day 7: Jatumpampa - Incacancha. Hiking time: 6 hours:
This day we will continue our trek ascending to the summit of the first pass known as Apacheta Qollahuaya de Moro Qarqa at an altitude of 4558m. With luck we can observe the flight of the Condor, Viscachas, and deers. This is considered a sacred place by the locals. From here we continue to a second high pass known as Apacheta Tambillo at 4679m of altitude, and from here we can observe the impressive and beautiful Akhamani (5700m) snow covered mountain. Then for about 3 kms we descend to the valley known as Incacancha (4009m) where we fix our camp. B, LB, D.

Day 8: Incacancha – Sunchulli (Hiking time: 6 – 7 hours):
After breakfast we start our trekking day at about 8 a.m. and beginning with a steep ascent of about 2 hours on the place known as Mil Curvas (thousand curves) until we reach 4181m of altitude where we find a small lagoon, surrounded by mountains. From here we continue ascending until we reach the Apacheta Qellwa Khota at 4597m. Then we descend into the valley where we find the settlement of Qellwa where live very few people mainly involved in the mining activities. Our trek continues descending to the Qellwa Khota lagoon and then, up to the Viscachani pass at 4833m. From the top of the pass we can see the summit of the Huayna Sunchuli peak. Continuing our trek we descent until we reach the gold mine of the “the Virgin of the Rosary” where we can find miners still searching for gold, and even buy some chips of the precious metal. Finally, at the end of the day, we take a stroll in the “Pueblo Perdido” (lost village) near the mine, where the Spaniards built their lodgings to exploit the mountain: reminder of the frenzied history of the gold fever for the Spanish crown. Camp at 4719m at Sunchulli village located at the foothills of the Cuchillo Nevado (5655m). B, LB, D. 

Day 9: Sunchuli – Illo Illo River (Pauchi Cocho). Hiking time: 6 – 7 hours:
We leave our camp at about 8 a.m. and then begin the steep ascent towards Sunchuli Pass (5060m) which we reach after about 2 hours. This is the highest point during the trek. From here, we can see a small lagoon at the base of the imposing glacier and the summits of the Macho Sunchulli and Huayna Sunchulli peaks. Then we descend to the Lidiuni Lagoon and continuing our descend we will reach Piedra Grande, a picturesque village composed of stone houses and located at 4161m of altitude. One more time, we can see the traces of the gold miners etched on the mountainsides. An easy downhill takes us to our lunch spot. Then, a 2 hours walk take us up to the Koppe pass at 4930m from where we get a splendid view over the Valley of Azanjoce and a great panorama over the Andes. Finally and after a 2 hours descent, we reach our camp at Athaguani where we will camp at about 3700m. B, LB, D.

Day 10: Illo Illo River – Pelechuco Village. Hiking time: 7 - 8 hours:
Today we descent into the valley of the Keansani River and then we ascend up to the Keansani Apacheta pass at about 4900m from where we get impressive views of the surrounding mountains. Then we descend to the black lagoon of Keansani from where we continue our walk towards the Agua Blanca community. We can also visit on the way the W’atara ruins (3921m). Then we continue to the ruins of Huanan. At the end we reach the Pelechuco Pass (4700m) from where then we descent towards Pelechuco Town (2 hours), on the way we can see the imposing Mount Katantica with its 5560 meters of altitude. Arrival at Pelechuco where we overnight in a basic lodge. B, L, D. 

Day 11. Pelechuco – La Paz:
From Pelechuco transport (about 8 - 9 hours) back to the city of La Paz where we transfer you to your hotel. This will be a long drive back to the capital of Bolivia. Hotel in La Paz, and farewell dinner with some few celebratory drinks. (B, LB, D). 

Day 12: Transfer out.
Morning transfer to the airport for your flight back home (or program extension). (B)
